Fall travel guidance is arriving in layers this year: long weekend road-trip itineraries from Michigan and the East Coast, foliage field notes from New England, a free Adirondack balloon festival, EV road-trip tactics and a Pennsylvania car-free challenge that runs through September.

A Parade itinerary published Aug. 1 is built around Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Marquette and the Keweenaw Peninsula, with Pure Michigan's Kelly Wolgamott mapping the route. The itinerary starts at the Mackinac Bridge, which costs $4 for a passenger vehicle, and suggests stops such as Tahquamenon Falls, Pictured Rocks Cruises (2026 season May 9 through Oct. 18) and Brockway Mountain Drive, which climbs to 720 feet. It advises that fall color in the Keweenaw and western Upper Peninsula tends to peak from the last week of September through the first two weeks of October, with Munising and Pictured Rocks peaking in the first half of October.

Condé Nast Traveler's East Coast guide includes a 115-mile drive from Boston to Provincetown on U.S. Route 6. The guide recommends stops at Cape Cod Lavender Farm, Atlantic White Shark Conservancy expeditions, Truro Vineyards and Provincetown institutions like Sal's Place and Gifford House, with two nights in Provincetown.

NewEngland.com and Yankee have published foliage notes from editor Kim Knox Beckius and foliage expert Jim Salge, pointing to Pittsburg, N.H., for late September peak color, Burlington for long-lasting lake views, and Flagstaff Lake in Maine for hikers. It also flags events: Harvest on the Harbor in Portland Oct. 15-17, Trinity Church's 300th anniversary barbecue in Newport on Sept. 20, and the Hartford Coffee Trail.

Secret NYC reported that the 53rd Adirondack Balloon Festival runs Sept. 17-20 in Queensbury and Lake George, with more than 70 balloons and free admission, expecting over 100,000 visitors. It gave directions from New York City by car (I-87 North), bus (Adirondack Trailways) and train (Amtrak to Fort Edward-Glens Falls), plus hotel suggestions in Queensbury, Glens Falls and Lake George.

Mashable's video guide to planning long-distance EV road trips is based on a journey between the San Francisco Bay Area and Reno in a 2026 Chevy Equinox EV. Antuan Goodwin's chapters cover route-planning apps and EV software, charging ports and adapters, and driving habits and speed.

Commute PA is running a "Go Car Free" campaign through September, with the theme "One Less Car. One More Hero." Participants who record at least four trips without driving alone during September are entered into a drawing for one of four $100 gift cards, and the campaign builds toward World Car Free Day on Sept. 22. Modes include biking, walking, transit, carpooling, vanpooling or working from home.

Taken together, the guides show a fall travel season that pairs classic driving with car-free options: travelers can build a foliage road trip or earn rewards for leaving the car at home, and the dates line up with peak color windows and early autumn festivals.
